Children want to learn about music through their first-hand experiences playing music and it is important that we provide regular opportunities for this to happen. Wherever possible, providing these opportunities frequently is desirable, as well as giving children access to instruments between the class music lessons to both practice and further explore. A goal of the music children play together or individually is fluency; the work which we set and the expectations we have should try to promote this. Instruments are not just for ‘learning to play an instrument’, i.e. faithfully ‘recreating’ someone else’s music; they are also the tools we use to create our own music.
