Music across the creative curriculum

Curriculum models

There are many different curriculum models and it is useful to identify how the curriculum is organised in your school and how music sits within this.

Task

Find out how music as a subject is taught to classes across your school.

Is it taught regularly?

Is it taught by the class teacher, or someone else?

Is it taught as a separate subject or as part of cross-curricular delivery (sometimes called the creative curriculum, topic-based or learning journeys)?

It may be that different classes or year groups have different arrangements.

Then talk to other teachers to find out if they use music to enhance other curriculum areas, and if so, how they do this.

Jonathan Barnes’ (2012, 2015) models of cross-curricular learning are helpful for thinking about the positioning of different subjects in a variety of curriculum models. Six of these models are considered.
