Music in the classroom: Developing a cultural understanding

In this free webinar, Jayne Price presents findings from her doctoral research which investigates the way in which young people from ethnically diverse groups are currently being served by music provision in the UK.

The study interrogates the issue of inclusive music education from ethnically diverse pupils’ perspectives, and identifies the institutional and personal constructs that impact on their engagement and participation. This analysis is used to identify culturally responsive pedagogies and practice and considers implications for the curriculum, Music Education Hub provision, and music teachers’ training and professional development.

Jayne Price was the PGCE Music tutor at the University of Huddersfield, and is currently Acting Head of Initial Teacher Education. She previously taught music in secondary schools with diverse pupil populations in Derbyshire and Leeds for 15 years.
